Pool Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know

Are you thinking about adding a fiberglass swimming pool to your Akron, Ohio property? If so, you’ll be glad to know that pools can be a great source of fun and enjoyment, as well as an excellent way to get in your exercise. With that said, though, if you have children, pools can also prove to be a safety risk and a drowning hazard. For that reason, you’ll want to keep a few pool safety tips in mind and follow them closely.

INSIST ON SWIMMING LESSONS

To begin with, all children who are going to be around water really need to take swimming lessons from a professional. Even if your child seems like a “natural” in the water or has had a few lessons from you, there’s no substitute for real, structured lessons from a qualified teacher. For best results, have your child go through these lessons before you even put in your pool.

KEEP A WATCHFUL EYE

Even after your child is a certified swimming pro, you still want to keep an eye on them whenever they’re in the pool. If you can’t do it personally, hire a babysitter or find another adult who can. Make it a hard and fast rule in your home that no one uses the pool at any time without adult supervision. Even strong swimmers could fall and hurt themselves or pass out for some reason and land in the pool. Thus, it’s best not to take chances no matter what.

INSTALL A POOL FENCE

As a final precaution, put a fence around your pool and keep it locked when not in use. Not only will this step keep your own kids out of the water, but it will also prevent other children or people from wandering into your pool, taking an unauthorized dip, and potentially hurting themselves.

Pools are great, and there’s nothing like having one of your very own. However, once you become a pool owner, remember you also have a responsibility to keep your child and others safe, so don’t take it lightly!
